The National Peace Corps Association, in conjunction with RPCVs of Washington, are sponsoring a celebration of the Peace Corps 40th anniversary in Washington, DC September 20th to 23rd.

|E&E RPCVs at the 40th|
|The E&E RPCVs Conference Organizing Committee of Chair C.J. Smith Castagnaro, Courtney Arnold, Marian Haley Beil, Leo Cecchini and Judy Smith have worked to present a variety of events of special interest to our members. Additional volunteers include Sue Hoyt Aiken, Owen Cylke, Dave Gurr and Gerry Hoffman.

To get there:
Via Metro subway system: Take either the Blue or Yellow Line to King Street station in Virginia. Take any bus going to Alexandria Hospital (about a ten minute ride). Get off at the intersection with North Howard Street. Turn right at the corner on to North Howard Street. Walk (in the opposite direction from the Hospital) to the first block on the left - Loyola Avenue - and the Gurr's home is the first house on the right (No. 4311).
If lost, or need a ride from King Street, call before getting on the metro in DC and Dave will be at the King Street metro station 703/370-2553.

|Ethiopia & Eritrea RPCVs Steering Committee meeting.
Hotel Washington. Gather in the lobby immediately following the Opening Plenary Session with the keynote speaker at Constitution Hall.

Presented by by LaDena Schnapper (Dessie, Awassa 6366). LaDena will also present the buna ceremony at our Saturday evening event, it would be nice for many to go an support her on the Mall.
About it LaDena writes: "The amazing thing is that my cook from 38th years ago in Dessie, the woman who first introduced me to the ceremony, has just come to the States and will be joining me. Another full circle!"
Ethiopia 2 Mini-Reunion

|NEW||>||Ethiopia and Eritrea Country Updates Presentation

|The speakers will include:
Ambassador Imru Zelleke Former Ethiopian diplomat and resident of the USA since the 1970s, Ambassador Zelleke, who was a participant in the transfer of Eritrea from British control to Ethiopia in the 1950s, will speak about the origins of Eritrea and the current state of affairs in Ethiopia.
John Rude (Tessenei, Eritrea; Adi Ugri, Eritrea 62-64) John, recipient of an awarded from the Government of Eritrea for his service to the country, will speak about current conditions there.
Dave Gurr (Addis Ababa 62-64). Dave, a member of E&E RPCVs Steering Committee, will give a summary of E&E RPCVs efforts to help end the war between the two countries and the current status of the ceasefire. He will also provide an update on enCORPS which he directs.
Harris Wofford (Peace Corps/Ethiopia Country Director 1962-64), former U.S. Senator, and present head of the Corporation for National Service. Harris will talk about his recent visits to Ethiopia and Eritrea and compare what he has seen today with the Ethiopia and Eritrea of 40 years ago.
A speaker on AIDS in Ethiopia and Eritrea. Ethiopia and Eritrea are among those African nations facing dire situations caused by AIDS. Our speaker will present the scope of the problem and what must be done. (tentative)
Don Paradis, who worked for Haile Selassie's government from 1957 to 1968. (tentative)
Moderator: Leo Cecchini (Asmara 62-64), Chairman of E&E RPCVs Peace Initiative Committee, and Chairman of NPCA Peace and Conflict Resolution Subcommittee.
Reception at the Ethiopian Embassy
The Embassy is a short walk from the Van Ness Metro stop on the Red Line.
An evening of dining and entertainment
|NEW||>||The day will be topped off with an injera and wat dinner PLUS the buna-coffee ceremony presented by LaDena Schnapper (Dessie, Awassa 6366) AND musical and dance entertainment provided by the Nile Ensemble, who will be joined by LaDena [dance], Charlie Sutteon (Addis Ababa 6668) [maskinko] and John Barnes (Addis Ababa 6668) [clarinet].
Cost: $15 per person, includes dinner, gratuity, and entertainment. (Does not include drinks.)

|Procession of Flags
Plan to march behind the flag of Ethiopia or Eritrea as the conference attendees parade across the Memorial Bridge from the Lincoln Memorial, past the grave of John F. Kennedy, and onto a the closing ceremony at the Arlington National Cemetery Amphitheater.
Anyone who would like to take a turn carrying his/her country flag may do so be sure to bring your camera so that the moment can be recorded for history!
